It's more than likely you'll have seen a car drive past you with an unnecessarily loud exhaust, wrapped or painted in bold colours. Maybe with a unique registration. It looks like they're just seeking attention.
It's funny though, you see this stereotype everywhere. Young asian men with their overbearing cars. Beneath that image though, lies a deeper thruth, extending beyond just that obnoxious taste.
The car becomes something with a lot more weight than a machine to take you from A-B. For young men, particularly with an asian or ethnic background, navigating life through the heavy expectations and pressures of society and their culture results in a surpression of their own identity, and expressionism.
Through my own experience, I explore my relationship with media and cars, and how I break the confines of my dismissive family and culture through these forms of expression. How an entire generation is slowly breaking the cycle of being defined by anyone else.
A British-Asian video producer, with a passion for media and cars since a young age, finds both interests to be shattered by those meant to be the closest to him. His family dismiss his ambitions and achievements anywhere aside from academics - to them, this is the only way to get anywhere. Any other talent and passion is simply a waste of time, and embarrassing. He notices something though. Throughout his community, young men his age invest their entire worths into this. Fast cars, loud exhausts, prestigious badges. What may look like arrogance and pretension to the unsuspecting eye, is actually something a lot more human in nature. Through this documentary, he explores what this is for himself, and for those like him: a search for identity and pride, in a world that has told them to stay silent. In understanding this, he attempts to reclaim the narrative.
These choices allow me to showcase my technical ability across various formats and contexts, while exploring a complex theme through the vehicle of something that seems so inanimate. (Pun intended)
Using eye catching and cinematic composition, editing and lighting in both indoors and outdoor settings, I aim to portray my ability and successfully draw the attention from clients, collaborators and employers in particular for my postgrad career. Furthermore, I hope my work can achieve success at film festivals and competitions.
University Final Project media artefact submissions, consisting of a colour grading showcase, a commercial style automotive video, and a self expressive documentary. These choices allow me to showcase my technical ability across various formats and contexts, while exploring a complex theme through the vehicle of something that seems so inanimate. (Pun intended)
This project allowed me to create two distinct pieces that showcased my versatility as a video creator, while also allowing me to explore deeper themes related to identity and belonging.
From a technical standpoint, this project challenged me to adapt my editing and compositional skills to different styles and formats, ensuring each piece met its intended audience and purpose.
It has allowed me to expand my knowledge and refine my approach to video production across various genres and applications. In particular, I've been able to refine my colour grading and editing workflows in DaVinci Resolve, and use my existing knowledge of cuts and pacing from YouTube formats in order to refine how I approach different types of content and visual storytelling.
